Beginning the Journey Reflecting on Gratitude as a Cycle

Last year during our annual panel with recent grant recipients, David Harris, from St. Leonard’s Ministries in Chicago, stated: Gratitude is the testimony of those we serve, who make progress and then want to give back. I found this statement to be such a profound way of summing up the feeling many of us experience when we realize the blessing we have received. Gratitude is something anyone of any age, socio-economic status, race, gender, or geographic location can experience and express. Gratitude is our testimony, of the gifts we’ve received, both tangible and intangible; it is the story of the love that has been poured out upon us without regard for whether we deserve that love or not. Gratitude is our chance to add to the testimony of goodness unfolding around us, uniting us to people we may never meet or places we may never go.

The 2024 cohort of UTO grant sites consists of the most diverse group of grant locations in the past ten years. UTO is excited to support these communities and ministries that are striving to be the voice of welcome to the stranger, just like Jesus asked us all to do in Matthew 25. This year, the UTO Formation and Development Committee wanted to not only share the stories of the grant sites with our members, but to also learn from them about their experiences of gratitude. They asked the 2024 grant recipients to share a little bit about how they practice gratitude and what receiving a UTO grant means to them. Their reflections are found here in this booklet accompanied by a weekly theme, thoughts from our Board and staff, and prompts for personal reflection. We hope that by spending October with our grant sites, you’ll learn more about how gratitude is expressed around the globe and deepen your own gratitude practices.

This booklet is just one way to engage with our 2024 fall offerings. Throughout October, we will be sharing supplemental content and photos on social media, on our blog, and through daily text messages. We’ve also made a journal and craft for elementary-aged kids to join in the fun and deepen their own practices of gratitude.
